Jim Wallis is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Sojourners and the organizer of Call to Renewal where Obama spoke on the role of faith and politics. (Interestingly, not only were Obama and Hillary Clinton speakers, but so where Republicans Rick Santorum and Sam Brownback.)
On June 24, James Dobson aired a radio broadcast severely critiquing Obama’s 2006 speech at Call to Renewal. [CNN coverage]. I was amazed by Obama’s speech when I first heard it, apparently more than a year before Dobson did. In the speech Obama expounds the essential role of personal faith in the political process. I was not used to Democrats making this case. It was an enlarging moment for me.
Apparently Dobson thinks this speech is a personal attack on him.
Alison and I had been aware of the media flareup around this, but had not heard Dobson’s actual broadcast. We stayed up late last night, first watching the video of Obama’s Call to Renewal speech and then listening to Dobson’s critique.
Over the last few days I’ve pushed through a long planned relaunch of my other site, embracethegodlife.com. Although there are still a few features to add in, it is mostly completed.
I’d love for you to come by, check it out, and leave a comment or two.
If I had to pick a theme song for Alison and I at our 10th Anniversary, it would have to be Bucky Covington’s “It Good to Be Us”.
It’s good to be us,
good to be breathing
Day after night after day, this feeling
Feels the way it should
If this is as good as it gets, then good
It’s good to be us
I love the line “If this is as good as it gets, then good”. It sure fits our life now. In so many ways it seems that we’re living our dreams.
I was going to put the video to “It’s Good to Be Us” here for people to listen to, but it is so random and weird (Bucky is singing the song in a concert at a Dirtbike race in the video) that I just couldn’t do it.
